RevPi Core3 or RevPi Connect with DMX controller

Post by ravekanth »

Hello,

I am looking for a solution to control multiple (8-9 at least) DMX based LED bars in an industrial setting and came across the RevPi. :-)
One plan is to connect the bars in a series and control it with DMX gateway.
Is the RevPi Core3 better suitable in case we want to divide the LEDs in two sets with two controllers?
The RevPi Connect seems to give us more leeway in case we want to use other interfaces.
Any pointer would be very helpful to plan the purchase.
Additionally is there a suggested solution for connecting to a standard DMX connector from the gateway?

Thanks a ton :-)

Dear ravekanth, yes you have pointet out the right fact. The RevPi Core 3 Modules may connect to up to two DMX Gateway Modules. The RevPi Connect may just connect to one DMX Gateway.
You may have a look at the user manual here at this page https://www.kunbus.com/downloads.html Have a look at chapter 4.6 for the connection to a starndard DMX XLR plug.

Dear Dirk,

Thank you for the reply. Does the DMX gateway need to be powered separately? Could I connect them both to the Mean Well MDR-60-24 supply considering we might not be using extra modules.
in addition is it possible to have two DMX gateways for two separate universes with a single revpi core?

Thanks
Ravi

Dear Ravi,

The devices have the following specifications:
- DMX Gateway has a current consumption of approx. 100mA.
- RevPi Core has a current consumption of approx. 400mA.
- Switching power supply “Mean Well MDR-60-24” has an output current of 2.5A

As you'll see, the switching power supply is perfect for your setup with a RevPi and two gateways.
You can also connect two gateways to the RevPi, one right and one left on the RevPi see here.

Thank you for the responses. We finally got our units and tried to set them up at first with a lab power supply.

Unfortunately the questions seem to popping up.
The RevPi Core gets turned on and we can access it. However as soon as I have the DMX gateway, the gateway shows all 3 LEDs as red. The supply is powering it with 23.5 Volts at the moment.
Is there something else that we need to check?

We first turn on the power to the DMX gateway and then to the Revpi core (we use the voltage knob on the supply to provide the power to the core unit after the gateway has been powered)

Hi, you should power on the devices together. They switch to the save state in case the communication is interrupted. This results in setting the whole process image to "0". The LEDs are maybe just on the upper and the lower position red and the middle is maybe off but it is hard to see. So the upper LED is the power LED and shows red light on save state. The lower LED is the traffic LED and indicates that the gateway works in slave mode or DMX traffic is currently not active.
So again please power on the devices together and they should work fine.
